When you go to
college, it is very easy to get into a routine. You
have your class schedule, friends, and a hangout.
You may even live on campus and eat at the
cafeteria. That will all change as you leave college
though and enter the workforce. While this is going
to be exciting, it will also present its challenges.
For most people, the logical step after leaving college is to find a job. Getting your information out there in the form of a resume and a job application is very important. Yet you can apply all over the place and not get hired if they don't stand out. You need to get your foot in the door and get those calls for job interviews. Use your experience from college to help you do just that. You didn't graduate from college without some effort on your part. You have been organized, reliable, met your deadlines for projects, and learned how to balance your time wisely. You likely took part in different activities as well. All of this can offer a good foundation for you to undertake this new journey. Getting to work on time is a huge part of being successful. In college, your instructor may not have cared if you were late or if you showed up at all. However, when you're at a job your boss is going to care so make it a priority to be on time every single day. Your appearance is important as well. Depending on the job, you may have to go shopping to update your wardrobe. Just like in college, you need to be motivated on the job. Show that you are a self starter and that you can complete work without someone constantly looking over your shoulder. You will have to earn trust in that regard so don't blow it from the start. When you get feedback about your work, don't let it get you down. View it as a positive experience for you to grow from. That is what you did in college when you received your grades from your professors. One of the biggest differences is that in college you may have had a social life that was very busy and fun. While you can have fun at work, you need to focus on your job. Don't spend your time there socializing with everyone and getting involved with personal business people have going on. You can be friendly but you also want to keep it on a professional level. In time, you may develop some solid friendships with people you work with. At that time you can ask them to join you for lunch or do something after work if you wish. Your role at work though is to accomplish the various tasks that the employer has hired you to take on. There can be conflicts in the workplace, but keep your emotions in check. If you have a problem, try to work it out with the individual. If you can't, then talk to your supervisor about it. In college, you can easily avoid those you don't want to talk to or be associated with. In a work environment though you may not have a choice. Even if you don't like someone, you may have to work with him or her, so make an effort. A positive attitude will help you to adapt to the work environment after leaving college. While it may be a scary transition to leave what is familiar to you -- view it as a new opportunity. You have the chance to open up a new chapter in your life. Any job you have is going to offer you work experience that can help you with your career down the road. You may not be happy with a particular job but take pride in it anyway. When you leave, at least you will do so in good terms and in good conscience. |
