| Welcome to WorkBloom's Career Center |
Working beyond earning a regular pay
check is what leads to a successful career. Going
up the corporate ladder requires a combination of skills
and favourable circumstances. Factors internal to
us, but also external to us can have a direct impact on
our career progression. What can we do that is
within our control to ensure success in our career?
WorkBloom's Career Center tries to answer this question
by featuring a series of articles addressing various
aspects of life at work and career advancement.
Some
thoughts about career advancement:
Is a promotion for the better? Sometimes, but
not always. Some people who thought they wanted a promotion ended
up regretting it. The best advice is to "choose" your promotion as opposed to
accepting whatever is handed to you. Make sure you are ready
for the challenge that will come with the added
responsibilities.
What is your motivation for getting a promotion? Do you
want more money, more status, more power? Obviously,
you want something "more." But keep this in mind: is
that something more worth the sacrifices that go with
it? If yes, go straight ahead. Otherwise, lay down the
goals you have set for yourself and think of how you can
best meet those goals. There may be a way you can
negotiate your promotion to fit what you want instead of
accepting it the way it is offered to you.
Want to climb the ladder, but avoid
office politics?
Impossible. Office politics is
about human interactions and lobbying to push one's
agenda through. As you go up, this will only intensify.
Although office politics often has a bad connotation,
you don't have to go down that path. The choice is
yours.
How to get up there? Fundamentally, it's a question of
having the right attitude and gaining the trust of
people around you. Hard work is not enough. You need to
work hard, show results, and nurture relationships.
