Internships, whether paid or not, are good ways to acquire practical experience and figure out whether a field or an
organization is a good fit or not. For most students, that's one of the best ways to get a foot in the door,
whether part-time during the school year or full-time during summer vacation. Indeed, internships can lead to
full-time employment upon graduation and ease the transition into the workforce.
In addition to rendering a resume more compelling and
making for interesting discussions during interviews, an internship in the field where you study can bring out
that practical side that will make the "theory" you learn in class more relevant and easy to "visualize."
Internships are made for "novices" and, therefore, when organizations accept to take on an intern, they feel a
responsibility to mentor that person. The relationship that can be developed with someone more experienced can prove invaluable in terms of acquiring new knowledge and
making new contacts (yes, it is appropriate to refer to the concept of "networking").
