I have once again stumbled upon a new strategy that job seekers are using when it comes to their resume. This latest trend is called presentation resumes (AKA visual resumes or presumes) and as the name suggests it is a visual production of your resume that is similar to a PowerPoint. A presentation resume is not a video resume, although you can insert videos into your presentation. And it’s not an infographic resume, but you can include graphics and other visuals. By creating customized slides and putting them into a presentation you have the ability to present yourself in a way that transcends the traditional resume.

There are several websites that are devoted to the creation of these presentations; some focus primarily on resume presentations but others allow you to create presentations for just about anything. To appreciate everything you can do with a presentation resume your best bet would be to check one out. I tried out two of the websites that offer presentation resumes but the result was less than impressive (not because of the website but because I lacked the time and skill to put together a presentation that would WOW you). The websites I looked at have examples of finished products so I would encourage you to check them out, they are www.prezi.com and www.sliderocket.com.

There are different pricing levels on both of these sites and each offer a free basic option although you will not have access to the advanced features that come with a paid registration. What do you do with a finished presentation? The sites let you share your presentation in a few different ways: by providing a link, mobile access, the ability to download and share offline or availability in a public gallery.

Depending on what your goals are for your presentation you will want to review the different sites and see which one best meets your needs. Expect to spend a bit of time creating your presentation; after all, it doesn’t pay to use this alternative form of self promotion if you are not going to take the time to learn about the features and put in the effort to create the best possible presentation.

I like the idea of presentation resumes but I don’t think they are for everyone. It will definitely be easier for those creative-type individuals and those seeking a position where creativity and innovation will be appreciated. A presentation resume won’t replace a paper resume but can be a supplemental strategy that puts you ahead of an oversaturated pool of candidates.

When it comes to your resume it seems like there is a new trend every week. There is the risk of overwhelming your audience if your try to promote yourself with too many strategies at once: traditional resume, LinkedIn profile, presentation resume, Google profile, personal blog, bio etc. Limit yourself to one or two at a time. It doesn’t have to be the same every time, use the techniques that best fit the situation and job.
